William and Kate issue statement on Queen’s death

Prince William paid his respects to his late grandmother on Saturday, saying “the world lost an extraordinary leader.”

In his first statement since Queen Elizabeth’s death, the Prince of Wales, 40, praised her commitment to Britain and the Commonwealth, as well as her role as matriarch of the Royal Family.

“I have had the benefit of The Queen’s wisdom and reassurance into my fifth decade,” he said.

Prince William noted how his wife, Kate Middleton, now Princess of Wales, benefitted from the Queen’s “guidance and support,” while the couple’s three children have memories that “will last their whole lives.”

“She was by my side at my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life,” he added, possibly referring to the death of his mother Princess Diana in 1997.

“My grandmother famously said that grief was the price we pay for love. All of the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary Queen.”

He concluded the statement by pledging to “honour [sic] her memory by supporting my father, The King, in every way I can.”

The Cambridges had already stepped up their royal responsibilities in the months prior to the Queen’s passing.

William was in Balmoral at the time of her passing, while Kate stayed home to be with the children.

They were front and center with their three children — Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4 — during Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee festivities in June.

William and Kate also filled in for the Queen on a number of occasions as her health deteriorated.

The future king and his wife had decided back in June to relocate from London to the town of Berkshire in Windsor in order to be closer to the Queen.

The move was, in part, to help William prepare for his role as the future King of England, sources said at the time.

The Walses had previously been living full-time with their three children at Kensington Palace in London.
