Tesla crash on Bonneville Salt Flats injures family of five

A Utah family took their Tesla onto the Bonneville Salt Flats and wrecked it at more than 100 mph, police said.

The five occupants were taken to a Salt Lake City hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They are from Utah County, the south end of the Salt Lake metro area.

The crash was reported at 8:38 p.m. Sunday on the salt flats about 10 miles northeast of Wendover, Utah, just across the Nevada line. Toward the end of civil twilight, it was not yet dark but visibility was greatly reduced.

The 2022 Tesla was traveling more than 100 mph and “collided with an earthen berm with very little braking,” the Wendover police said. Images posted by the police showed extensive damage to the front of the car, whose wheels were half-buried in mud.

Seatbelts and airbags were credited with reducing injuries.

Driving is allowed on the salt flats, site of high-profile land speed record attempts.
