Smart & Final plans new store at site of closed San Jose grocery site

SAN JOSE — Smart & Final is planning to open a big warehouse store in the building where a grocery outlet had operated for many years in San Jose, according to banners at the retail site.

The warehouse-style food and household supplies store has struck a deal to lease a south San Jose space that had been occupied by Lucky, which is one of the California brands of Modesto-based Save Mart Supermarkets.

Smart & Final is seeking to hire several people for the San Jose site at 430 Blossom Hill Road, according to a spot check of the warehouse store’s careers page.

A sign that revealed plans for the new warehouse operation was visible this week on the former Lucky’s store at 430 Blossom Hill Road in San Jose.

Smart & Final Extra is “coming soon,” proclaimed banners hanging from the building and on a nearby fence in front of a San Jose shopping center.

The new store is opening in Downer Square, a neighborhood retail center with addresses that range from 402 through 444 Blossom Hill Road in San Jose.

Downer Square occupies about 6.9 acres, documents on file with the Santa Clara County Assessor’s Office show.

The entire shopping center totals about 73,500 square feet, according to a post on the LoopNet commercial property listing service.

The former Lucky site totals an estimated 39,000 square feet, according to a space availability posted on the website of Coates & Sowards, a Campbell-based property management firm that is handling Downer Square.

After Smart & Final opens, the warehouse store will join a Walgreen drug store as the primary anchors for Downer Square.

Downer Square was built in 1966, a LoopNet post states.

“It is rare to have a vacancy in this center,” Coates & Sowards stated in a post about Downer Square.

Besides the anchor tenants, other merchants in the L-shaped complex include Fresh & Clean cleaners, Nail Art salon, Pearl River Chinese Restaurant, Downer Square Shoe & Luggage, Downer Square Bottle Shop and Yum Yum Donuts.

“Almost all of the tenants have been there for 20 years or more, some over 40 years and a few over 50 years,” according to the Coates & Sowards post.

Smart & Final has begun to recruit employees for the 430 Blossom Hill Road warehouse store, along with other locations in the Bay Area and elsewhere.

Besides multiple stores in San Jose, other hiring locations include Oakland, Fremont, San Francisco, San Pablo, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Pleasanton, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, South San Francisco, Vallejo, Redwood City, Daly City, Pleasant Hill, Milpitas, Hayward, Antioch, Fairfield, San Rafael, Gilroy, Danville and San Mateo.

The San Jose jobs on Blossom Hill Road and other store locations were listed as part-time positions, according to the Smart & Final recruiting page.

“Stores count on part-time associates to provide excellent customer service, keep the shelves fully stocked with good, fresh food and create an all-around great shopping experience for our customers,” a post on the retailer’s careers section states.
