Motorcyclist dies in collision on Santa Teresa

SAN JOSE — A motorcyclist died after hitting a car Wednesday afternoon at a South San Jose intersection, police said.

The collision was reported at 1:58 p.m. on Santa Teresa Boulevard at Lean Avenue, according to a San Jose police news release.

Police said an initial investigation determined that a man riding a dirt bike west on Santa Teresa “at a high rate of speed” crossed a red light at the intersection with Lean Avenue. The man hit a 2018 Tesla sedan that was crossing on a green light.

The rider was seriously injured and died at the scene, police said. His name was not publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Police said the Tesla driver, who stopped after the collision, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Wednesday’s collision marked San Jose’s 48th traffic death of the year, and the sixth involving a motorcyclist who died. The city continues to be on pace to surpass the 60 traffic deaths recorded in 2021, which was a 25-year peak matched in 2015 and 2019.

Anyone with information about the collision Wednesday can contact Detective Keith Aldinger by email at 4183@sanjoseca.gov or at 408-277-4654.
