Most say Biden attack on Trump, MAGA will further divide US: poll

Most Americans believe President Biden’s primetime speech last week in which he attacked former President Donald Trump and his “Make America Great Again” movement as a threat to the country will only serve to further divide Americans, according to a new poll.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey found that 59% of respondents said Biden’s Sept. 1 remarks at Independence Hall in Philadelphia will further fray national unity — and nearly half of those polled didn’t even bother to watch the speech.

“Too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal,” the president said at the time. “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”

“There’s no question that the Republican Party today is dominated, driven, and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans. And that is a threat to this country,” Biden continued in a speech the White House billed as remarks on the “battle for the soul of the nation.”

Trump himself fired back in a speech in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. two days later, saying Biden’s speech was full of “hatred and anger.”

“Joe Biden came to Philadelphia, Pa., to give the most vicious, hateful, and divisive speech ever delivered by an American president, vilifying 75 million citizens,” the 45th president said at his Saturday rally. “You’re all enemies of the state. He’s an enemy of the state if you want to know the truth.”

The Reuters poll also found that 58% of Americans say the MAGA movement is jeopardizing the foundations of democracy and 60% of Republicans don’t think the movement represents the majority of the GOP.

The survey put Biden’s approval rating at 39% — and just 75% among Democrats — with 57% disapproving of the job he’s doing. The poll also found that two-thirds of Americans think the US is on the wrong track.

The poll surveyed 1,003 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
