Tim Sgrignoli, 29, of Ventura, had last been seen Sunday afternoon on the Trespass Trail in Gaviota State Park. His girlfriend was suffering from heat exhaustion, so he went to get help for her while she waited by the trail.

The woman was rescued by a helicopter crew from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, but Sgrignoli was not found. He had left his phone with his companion.

Around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, his body was found between the Trespass Trail and Highway 101 in the area of the Gaviota Peak trailhead.

A spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s office said that the cause of his death had not yet been determined but that heat was likely a factor. The temperature was in the high 90s when Sgrignoli went missing.

The search had involved dozens of personnel, with dogs, drones, helicopters and all-terrain vehicles.
